Imagine walking into a boutique fashion studio filled with pieces all in your favorite colors, in a style exactly suited to your tastes, and…everything fits you perfectly! Impeccably cut trousers, sultry summer dresses, wispy silk pajamas for the coziest of nights indoors, all yours for the taking.
When I learned to sew a few years back it freed me from the often narrow constraints of what retail had to offer. It opened my eyes to the travesty of fast fashion, the poor construction techniques used in many commercially produced garments, and allowed me to dream of the most unique wardrobe I could conjure for myself.
Wandering the aisles of a fabric shop represents an endless range of possibilities. There’s so much color, pattern, and texture to play with. So many design ideas come to me! No longer is this girl beholden to what’s trending for the season, nor do I worry whether or not that style is going to be complimentary to my body shape. I can fall in love with the deepest of blues in summer or lavender in winter and create a look that speaks to who I am personally.
Working with a tailor is a great investment. They’ve trained extensively in their craft, learning techniques that have been passed down for generations. The quality of construction will leave you looking and feeling better in your clothes, they will last longer, and they won’t go out of style in a mere three months.
Fashion is a joyful experience. It is personal. It is about mood and is an expression of the soul. This is something I actually talk to people about often. Every piece in your closet, no matter the size of said closet, should be your favorite piece, your “go-to” outfit, the thing you wear on a date or to a big work meeting. Is that the state of your current wardrobe? If not, it’s time to consult with someone to help you develop a collection of can’t-live-without garments.
